Miracle Munchkins and Miracle Monkeys
James and Michael -
were born on April 23, 2007. James weighed only 1 pound 11 ounces and Michael weighed only 1 pound 10 ounces. They were born 17 weeks early at only 23 weeks and 5 days gestation! They could not breathe without machines! James and Michael lived at the Saint Barnabas NICU for 4 months. They had many ups and downs, went through numerous surgeries, came on and off breathing machines and oxygen, and had many complications. It was every parents' nightmare and Jim and I were living it!
James and Michael made it through! They are 10 years old and they just started 5th grade. They are happy, healthy, STRONG, little boys! They enjoy riding their bikes, swimming and playing Minecraft! They would not be the handsome, blue-eyed little guys they are today without the love and support they received from the Saint Barnabas NICU.
On June 22, 2013, my family experienced the NICU horror once again when my twin niece and nephew were born, 8 weeks premature. PJ and Elaina - the Miracle Monkeys, spent time in the NICU, just like their older cousins. I'm happy to report that these two monkeys are doing just fine! They celebrated their 4th birhtday in June and we had a huge pool party!! My beautiful niece, Alexa, also spent a short time in the NICU when she was born on February 8, 2015. Needless to say, my family and I have had numerous experiences with the NICU at St. Barnabas. All of these miracles babies in my family are doing well today, thanks to the incredible care they received in the NICU!
Miracle Walk is a fundraiser specifically for the Saint Barnabas NICU. The money raised from Miracle Walk is used to purchase state-of-the-art equipment for babies just like James, Michael, PJ, Elaina and Alexa. These cutting-edge items are purchased to ensure that NICU babies receive outstanding care.
As a level III Regional Perinatal Center, the NICU offers the latest treatments in the field to provide the most advanced care for more than 1,100 premature and ill newborns each year. The Saint Barnabas NICU has one of the best infant survival rates among neonatal intensive care units in the nation.
On behalf of the entire NICU family and the 1,100 babies they care for annually, I hope you can support me and my team for this year's walk.
